To be honest, I used to struggle with this, especially when everyone around me seemed to have their lives on track. But I felt stuck!! Like I was falling behind, settling for less, and not doing enough to give myself the best shot at life. But God knows how much I worked my little behind off trying to figure things out in life. Maybe you feel like this right now, just know that you ain't alone, your feelings are valid.
I finally came to understand two very important things during the moments I felt like everything I did was insignificant and just not enough. One is comparison, the other is contentment. I call them Double Cs.
We’ve all heard the saying, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” And honestly, it is. A big reason why we put so much pressure on ourselves to have it all figured out is because when we look around, it seems like everyone else already has. I know some will say, “The pressure comes from within. I just want to live a good life.”And yes, that’s true. But let’s be real for a second, are you unknowingly using someone else’s life as a roadmap for your own? Are you giving yourself grace, celebrating your little wins? Do you even realize that the process is what matters most?
Okay, be honest, have you ever found yourself scrolling through LinkedIn or Instagram, and suddenly you feel like you’re not doing enough? Maybe someone you went to school with just got promoted, bought a car, or moved to a different country, and you’re sitting there with your hot cup of tea, wondering what you’re doing wrong. It’s wild how fast those feelings sneak in. One moment you’re okay, the next you’re literally questioning your whole life plan.
But bestie, what if your timeline isn’t broken? What if your wins just look different? Life isn't about catching up with people's life plans and goals. Maybe it’s about realizing you’ve come a long way too, and you'll get everything you want and more in your own way and your own path.
Can we also agree that it's hard being content with what you have if you don't really like it? But I learnt that, that's where the beauty of being content lies. Life isn't perfect, the little wins and life experiences we have are supposed to be celebrated. We are currently living in a "This isn't enough, I want more" kind of culture. We rarely pause and just enjoy what we have before going after more.
To me, this is contentment:
Simply living in the now.
Noticing the blessings tucked into your current season.
And choosing to enjoy what you have as you keep working towards more.
It also helps to zoom out of your life a little...
It’s easy to feel like nothing is working out when you’re only focused on what’s missing or what hasn't happened yet. But take a minute and ask yourself, “What’s working?” What progress have you made that you're brushing off because the ultimate goal is not there yet? Maybe your growth looks like finally asking for help. Maybe it’s showing up even when you don’t feel ready. That counts too.
And honestly? Giving yourself credit for the small stuff is not being delulu, it’s necessary. In fact, that’s how you build confidence when life feels shaky.
It’s also okay to admit that you’re still figuring things out. You don’t need to fake it. Most people are still piecing things together quietly behind the scenes. The idea that you’re supposed to have all the answers by a certain age? That pressure is tired. We’re all just doing our best with what we know, and that’s enough.
Another thing I’ve learned is to be softer with myself.
No one teaches you how to be kind to yourself while you’re figuring life out. Be patient with yourself when going through a tough season, have patience, gentleness, and be honest with yourself. You don’t have to have it all figured out to be worthy of peace or happiness!
So, do I finally have it all figured out? No, I don't. Life is short, and I refuse to put ridiculous amounts of pressure on myself. The pressure of who I'm supposed to be, where I'm supposed to be, or what I'm supposed to be doing in life. I choose to live my life wholly, enjoying what I have right now as I work towards the kind of life I want.
Maybe you should too...
So bestie,
Are you chasing a version of success that actually feels good to you, or just one that looks good online?
